5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best 200 bucks I've ever spent. 11/12/2009
Reviewer: Alan Morden   from Arcata, CA, USA
I rarely spend money on speakers, but I spend a fair chunk of time at my computer, and while doing so often listened to music through the inexpensive and barely adequate sound system that I got for it a few years ago. I love music, and am a serious amateur acoustic musician, so it made sense to me to spend my collective birthday money on a decent sound system for my old computer, which is a basic, nothing special home computer system. And WOW, did I make the right choice when I got a Cambridge SoundWorks Extreme 2.1 Multimedia System! I enjoy listening to music now more than ever. Why? Because now the music has a depth, clarity, and complexity that it never had before. I can now discern individual players accurately, and hear all kinds of tasty details that weren't very noticeable before. The sound of the music is now richer, punchier and, well, a lot more musical. And that makes it a lot more pleasurable to listen to. This sound system is a gem; I heartily recommend it to any music lover with a couple of hundred bucks to spare; it might well rejuvinate your computer's sound, like it did mine.

5 out of 5 stars Impressed! 10/26/2009
Reviewer: Daniel Brown   from New Jersey, USA
I just got the CSW Extreme 2.1 setup and I am nicely impressed. The Extreme 2.1 are all sorts of nice. Out of the box there was a lot of sub/sat separation. Only down side if not set up correctly. After just 10-15 minutes of fiddling with the bass/treble levels on the back of the sub I was able to null out the effect. After adjustments and tweaking I am *really* impressed. I have them on my PC in my office. The MC105s are just as nice as my T200s in the living room for the mid to high freq sound output. They do a nice real job as near field monitors. They are just a few feet away from my ears and sound great. With enough adjustment and the right levels the transition from sub to sat is smooth and imperceptible. But, if I turn the bass up just the slightest amount past the sweet spot you can very clearly identify the separation. So levels are important. Set to playback pretty flat they sound perfect and nail every tune I play. If you turn the bass up for big booms, the sub is very locatable. That is no good. Play back with balance and accuracy is the key. So spend a few minutes on the setup to match up levels as near as you can and you will be very happy. Don't expect giant out of proportion booms if you want a well imaged sound stage. The sub gets down low, and pretty tight. Properly adjusted levels provides very musical bass. Enjoyable music with a nice full sound. I listen to *all* music types. They take care of the job nicely, very nicely. They would really do a nice job as an entry level main sound system driven off a TV or CD player. Lots of clear sound from a small footprint. I put them through the test throwing classical, vocals, jazz, chant, psytrance, goa, rock, metal, blues at them. No complaints at all. I have advised my friends and family to grab them at this price. If you're running this on a PC in a small room they effortlessly put out enough SPL in close range to massage the ear drums. Thanks CSW!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, The Sound of Music on my computer ! 09/04/2009
Reviewer: Dan   from Duluth MN
Extreme 2.1's are amazing. Musical, full mids and highs as well as a VERY solid woofer. I had to back off the bass level as this is in my home office and my kids room is directly under my office and the bass really kicks. The set up/controls were excellent with bass and treble control on the woofer box that you can set for your preferences for the room and then control volume from the wired volume control on your desk. The "satellites" are very effective 2-way speakers with the 3.5" with a tweeter. That configuration is what many PC/multimedia speakers are advertised as producing "excellent bass". . . but they don't include a woofer and rely totally on that little cone for their "full" bass. But with the cross over in the woofer, you use that 3.5 for nice full mids. Not the thin tone I heard in the Bose Companion 3's that I nearly bought (for a higher price!) Again, not just a computer speaker, these are really producing a musical-sweet tone with enough power to wake up your neighbors, if not your teenagers (unless they are trying to nab your cool new speakers!)

5 out of 5 stars Great sound, great price, easy set-up 08/19/2009
Reviewer: Jim Richardson   from Amherst, MA USA
Use these in my dining room / kitchen area with the MusicWorks CD player / tuner. Sounds great with jazz, rock and classical, although they're not great with massed strings. But listen to small-group jazz, and they just come alive. Their reproduction of acoustic piano & guitar is uncanny. For 200 bucks, you can't beat 'em.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, really... 12/25/2008
Reviewer: Graham Crosby   (crosbyg@bellsouth.net) from Cumming, GA US
I'm a audio snob and a musician. I'm very picky about my music. This little system has it all. Amazing clarity and accurate reproduction for the money. I'll be buying a larger system for the home theater. Thanks for a fine quality product at a really good price.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing clarity, incredibly powerful 12/21/2008
Reviewer: A viewer   from Cardiff, UK
These speakers have to be the best I've ever owned. They're hooked up to my desktop PC, and even before I upgraded the soundcard, they gave excellent precision and clarity between various types of sound. The wired remote control allows you to vary the bass and treble separately from the volume, which is a great feature to have. To give you an idea of how powerful these speakers are, though, I'll just quickly tell you about the first time I used them. Whilst I was still in High School, I'd been involved in a project to film a video about the school and then show it to parents of prospective students at an open evening. This was just after I'd first bought the SoundWorks Extreme, so I thought I'd use those instead of the woefully bad PA system. The hall used was about 3000 square feet in space; with the volume at around 70%, the speakers were powerful enough to fill the hall with perfectly clear, crisp sound. Incredible!

Reviewer: Charlie   from New York, NY USA
The system was recommended to me by a specialist of customer service, and I purchased the system and installed and connected to my TV set with help of customer service over the phone. I am proud of the product and I like the service, too. The system works almost the same as a home theater system.

This is an unbelievable sound system for any price. I am blown away by the quality of such small speakers and a sub. Whatever you're doing Cambridge Soundworks, don't change the formula or try and cut corners because you're doing it right.

5 out of 5 stars bose can't touch these 08/06/2008
Reviewer: kathy   from Concord, NH
look no further, these are the speakers that you need and want for your PC - ditch the Altecs or whatever you have that is stealing sound clarity from your fine music quality discerning brain. DO NOT spend the $$$ on the bose 5 series, these $199 are their equals. I bought these speakers by the reviews on this site alone because of Cambridge Soundworks reputation...I am not disappointed, matter of fact I am thrilled at the purchase =)

2.1 system 05/02/2008
Reviewer: Brenden   from Springfield MA & Southington CT
This was the best system I could find. Better than Companion 3 and 5 (owned both, until I returned them so I could buy this system) Nothing better for $200!! Probably nothing better for $350!! Had people complaining from a floor above me all the way (10 dorm rooms down the hall). If you want POWER and great range for country, to rock, to techno, to rap....This system can handle it all and make it sound AMAZING! So many compliments from friends.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best 2.1 system for the money on the 04/17/2008
Reviewer: A viewer   from San Fran, CA
I bought the older version of these speakers (Megaworks 210D) which use a slightly different design to both the satellites (Newton MC50) and subwoofer (acoustic suspension vs. bass reflex). In a word, these speakers sounded brilliant. The clarity, depth of bass response, imaging, and sheer power was there. For a small to medium sized room, these things can really do some damage (in a good way). The subwoofer was unique in that it was a sealed design rather than the all-too-common ported designs that have a poor transient response. With the bass reflex subwoofer design, beats tend to hang a bit longer than they should. This is ok for hip-hop and home theater, but for all other genre's of music, it can be detrimental. I finally upgraded to a regular integrated amp, high-quality bookshelf speakers and a much larger powered subwoofer (sealed), but for a younger person, or someone on a tight budget, the 210D is about as good as it gets. Also, I was able to sell them for a good amount, so they really hold onto their value. Seriously, it's in the demo. People will be impressed. Bottom line, this system is the successor to the 210D and is still a far better performing system than anything Klipsch, Bose, or Logitech ever had.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.... best "computer speakers" ever 03/03/2008
Reviewer: A viewer   from Arvada, CO US
had these for 4 days now... and I am blown away by the sound quality of this set-up. I had a Logitech (Z2300) set before but was looking for something more audiophile - and this is more than i was hoping for. These speakers and sub would even upgrade my not so cheap home theater. Most of my music collection is in lossless (FLAC) and it is just amazing how much better everything sounds - i am running the speakers on creative x-fi - great combination - lower bitrates (256) sound nearly as good as lossless sounded before. I got the speakers for Cambridge's sale price - worth every penny. Also speedy delivery and outstanding customer service.

5 out of 5 stars No better deal for the money 02/07/2008
Reviewer: P Noel   from Boston, MA USA
I have been looking for a desktop pc speaker system for over a year. I have listened to many and was frustrated over not being able to find a quality system. I finally decided to buy the Companion 5 setup. Upon one last search before I made the purchase, I found the Cambridge SoundWorks 2.1 and was sold. This system has more balls not to mention better range, and is $150.00 less. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Crystal Clear Satellites and Wall Shaking Bass!! 02/03/2008
Reviewer: John Lynch   from Lynn, MA USA
I bought the Companion 5 and was satisfied, not blown away but satisfied. I was browsing on the internet to see what else was out there and I came across this setup which if bought in pieces would cost over $500. I went to the Cambridge Soundworks store and could not believe what I was getting for this price! Amazingly clear with earth shattering bass. The Companion 5 cannot hold a candle to this setup. This system picked up the midrange that the Companion 5 is always missing, plus it is way more powerful. This system turned my Imac computer into a home theater center. Best deal I have seen in a long time! I just wish Cambridge Soundworks would keep their retail stores open, they have the best speakers for the money no matter what you buy from them.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars is a "no brain-er" 01/20/2008
Reviewer: Jody Semper   from Clovis, CA. USA
These 2.1 speakers were purchased for listening to music on a PC. I took time to shop other brands as well. I listened to the display models at several stores. Thankfully, on the recommendation of a friend, purchased these even without hearing them first. This was a "leap of faith" from a careful shopper! These are the best sounding speakers that I have heard! A good value too, based on my comparisons. Love the flexibility of adding speakers if we want to. The phone support was first rate as well. Great product and great service = 5 stars easy! BTW, I have made another Cambridge speaker purchase since these. Outdoor speakers that are hooked up to a receiver and satellite radio. My expectations were realistic for use outside. Again I am amazed by how good these speakers are.
