3 out of 5 stars Great sound BUT inconvenient power switch 01/15/2010
Reviewer: A viewer   from New York, NY
I won't make redundant comments to all the other reviews--the sound is great for the price--but my one significant complaint is that the power switch is located on the subwoofer. Not particularly convenient considering the sub is almost always placed on the floor--unless you don't mind leaving it on all the time (which intuitively seems wasteful). On the MicroWorks II, the power is actually controlled with the volume knob--turn the volume all the way off and the last click is the power going off. On the MicroWorks II, the volume control also (optionally) attaches to one of the speakers which keeps it nice and neat. So I believe that the sound is better on this Extreme package, but the volume/power issues may or may not be significant to you.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice System 12/15/2009
Reviewer: Norman S.   from North America
I just received these speakers and they are really nice. One problem - they come without any speaker wires. I called tech help and the lady was rude and cold. The guy I ordered from on the phone assured me it was a complete system, ready to go. The sound is overall very nice. I am an audiophile and a professional musician. I am using these in my office with my macbook pro - using aiff music - not mp3 garbage. I turned the highs up a touch and lows down a touch - sub is in the middle of my office as such. overall range was good. They are nice in comparison to my high end Karat Canton speakers; but obviously do not match them for absolute critical listening. But for the $$$ - they are very nice and sweet.

5 out of 5 stars Fills my family room with amazing sound 11/24/2009
Reviewer: A viewer   from Portland, OR, USA
If you are reading this review, you are trying to decide whether or not to purchase these speakers. I empathize. I was like you a few years ago. I had heard about CSW but was skeptical, because I am the kind of person who needs to see and hear stereo equipment before I buy. I finally took a $30 risk and purchased a discontinued system called the PC works to use with my office computer. I was blown away! Simply incredible. I still listen to it every day. It was only a matter of time. I now own multiple CSW systems (radio to MC300 surround system with P500 SW) and this 2.1 system is the one I listen to most. Connected to my iPod or a wireless hub, it fills my family room with the most incredible sound. You cannot find a better value! I bought this system when CSW first offered it (2/3 years ago). I still love it! You will not be able to find anything better from Bose, JBL, Klipsch, Polk, you name it, at half the price. Take the risk. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best 200 bucks I've ever spent. 11/12/2009
Reviewer: Alan Morden   from Arcata, CA, USA
I rarely spend money on speakers, but I spend a fair chunk of time at my computer, and while doing so often listened to music through the inexpensive and barely adequate sound system that I got for it a few years ago. I love music, and am a serious amateur acoustic musician, so it made sense to me to spend my collective birthday money on a decent sound system for my old computer, which is a basic, nothing special home computer system. And WOW, did I make the right choice when I got a Cambridge SoundWorks Extreme 2.1 Multimedia System! I enjoy listening to music now more than ever. Why? Because now the music has a depth, clarity, and complexity that it never had before. I can now discern individual players accurately, and hear all kinds of tasty details that weren't very noticeable before. The sound of the music is now richer, punchier and, well, a lot more musical. And that makes it a lot more pleasurable to listen to. This sound system is a gem; I heartily recommend it to any music lover with a couple of hundred bucks to spare; it might well rejuvinate your computer's sound, like it did mine.

5 out of 5 stars Impressed! 10/26/2009
Reviewer: Daniel Brown   from New Jersey, USA
I just got the CSW Extreme 2.1 setup and I am nicely impressed. The Extreme 2.1 are all sorts of nice. Out of the box there was a lot of sub/sat separation. Only down side if not set up correctly. After just 10-15 minutes of fiddling with the bass/treble levels on the back of the sub I was able to null out the effect. After adjustments and tweaking I am *really* impressed. I have them on my PC in my office. The MC105s are just as nice as my T200s in the living room for the mid to high freq sound output. They do a nice real job as near field monitors. They are just a few feet away from my ears and sound great. With enough adjustment and the right levels the transition from sub to sat is smooth and imperceptible. But, if I turn the bass up just the slightest amount past the sweet spot you can very clearly identify the separation. So levels are important. Set to playback pretty flat they sound perfect and nail every tune I play. If you turn the bass up for big booms, the sub is very locatable. That is no good. Play back with balance and accuracy is the key. So spend a few minutes on the setup to match up levels as near as you can and you will be very happy. Don't expect giant out of proportion booms if you want a well imaged sound stage. The sub gets down low, and pretty tight. Properly adjusted levels provides very musical bass. Enjoyable music with a nice full sound. I listen to *all* music types. They take care of the job nicely, very nicely. They would really do a nice job as an entry level main sound system driven off a TV or CD player. Lots of clear sound from a small footprint. I put them through the test throwing classical, vocals, jazz, chant, psytrance, goa, rock, metal, blues at them. No complaints at all. I have advised my friends and family to grab them at this price. If you're running this on a PC in a small room they effortlessly put out enough SPL in close range to massage the ear drums. Thanks CSW!
