4 out of 5 stars Why some cd’s won’t play on the 765i 03/05/2010
Reviewer: Rick M   from DE
This is a response to reviewer Jim who complained about this unit not playing certain cd’s. I have also experienced this problem with the unit. It is my belief that the i765 will not play cd’s encoded with HDCD technology. Without going into details as to what that is, it’s basically a recording process which enhances the sound of recorded music. Not many cd’s use the technology, but whenever I find a disc which will not play on the i765 unit, it almost always has the HDCD logo in the cd label. Not sure why this is, but I believe it’s the cause of the problem....and your taste in music ;-).

2 out of 5 stars Nice sound when it works 02/21/2010
Reviewer: Jim McKendrick   from Southfield, Michigan
Hello, I bought a 765i for my sister for her birthday in Nov 2009. Initially, she had a problem with it recognizing/playing one of her CD's but since that time, it has been fine. I have a home stereo system but thought a 765i for the kitchen would be nice. I placed the order and in my anticipation of receiving it, I even followed UPS tracking. Well, I received it on Friday evening after work and started playing CD's. The 765i sounds good but it apparently doesn't care for my taste in music. It refused to play a Sarah Evans and a Jodee Messina CD. The CD's are in good condition and they are store bought - as opposed to being burned. I inserted the CD's, it thought about it and then ejected them. I tried over and over and had the same result. I thought my 765i had a problem with country music but on Saturday morning it refused to play an Evanescence CD as well. As much as I like the sound, I have to find a tabletop system that will play all of the music that I want to hear - especially since these same CD's play flawlessly on my bedside CD clock radio, my cheap Sony boom box and in my car. I will be calling for a return authorization number on Monday. I will be very disappointed if Cambridge expects me to pay the return shipping.

3 out of 5 stars Sound doesn't match the price 02/17/2010
Reviewer: A viewer   from Methuen, MA USA
The 765i has very strong midrange response. You can adjust the bass to match up with it, but the treble response isn't adjustable enough to keep up. Makes the sound vocal-heavy, and reduces the clarity and crispness of the upper treble frequencies. Another issue is that the "wide" stereo setting doesn't stick -- you need to re-enable the setting everytime you use the box! That's annoying. I returned the unit.

2 out of 5 stars Cambridge Soundworks used to make a good product 02/08/2010
Reviewer: Chris H.   from Amarillo, TX
I own an older CD740 and I have always been very pleased with the sound. I liked it enough that I bought a 765i for another room. Big mistake. It is obvious that the 765i is not nearly the quality the CD740 was. The first thing I noticed is that it is considerably lighter than the 740 - never a good sign for audio components. It usually means a smaller transformer and smaller magnets for the drivers. When I hooked it up, it was immediately apparent that the sound was dynamically compressed and veiled sounding. I put it side by side with the 740 and it was no contest. My 6 year old 740 sounded far better in every respect. I'm afraid that in order to drive the cost down, CS has compromised the quality that separated them from Bose. I'm sending mine back.

5 out of 5 stars Very Happy Customer 02/08/2010
Reviewer: John Erb   from Tampa, Florida
I wanted a nice sound system for my client waiting area and thought the bose was the only HIFI in a compact system. Fortunatly I saw a mention of Cambridge sound works i765 while web searching. I called a good friend in the TV & Stereo business and when he told me Cambridge was good and he even used to sell Cambridge products until the went public direct. In fact he said Cambridge was better than Bose so I ordered one. Well it's here and this i765 sounds incredible, soft or loud. One of my managers, Kevin plays french horn in an orchestra and was greatly impressed with the clear accurate sound. Now I've got to order one for home.
