ANDOVER, MA - With women actually out spending
men in the electronics aisles these days, gadgets - like MP3
players - are at the top of women's wish lists for Mother's
Day this year, according to the experts at Cambridge SoundWorks.
The Consumer Electronics Association reports that women are
expected to account for over half of the estimated $135 billion
dollars spent on consumer electronics in 2006.
"Women have taken a lead role in determining what technology-related
products make it into the household, especially when it comes
to home entertainment," says Laurie Fearing, Cambridge SoundWorks'
resident expert on women's buying trends. "We've been studying
women's purchasing habits for years. Women want tech products
that keep them connected, provide hours of entertainment,
are fashionable, and fit into their family's lifestyle."
Fearing outlines some trends that have more and more women
shopping - and asking for fun, easy-to-use, fashionable electronics.
- " Entertainment to go. The Creative Zen Vision:M is an
MP3 player, video player and photo viewer all rolled into
one portable, stylish gadget. It's the perfect gift for
ladies that love to listen to music, snap digital photos,
or watch TV shows and home movies on the go. Winner of the
prestigious "Best of CES" 2006 and "Best in Show" awards,
the Zen Vision:M holds up to 15,000 songs, 120 hours of
video or tens of thousands of digital photos that can be
viewed on its gorgeous 2.5-inch color LCD screen. It also
features an FM radio and recorder. Available in five high-gloss
colors - black, white, blue, green or pink. ($299.99; us.creative.com,

City).
- "Music on-the-go. Whether it be a picnic in the park,
a day at the beach or a backyard barbeque, give your favorite
women the PlayDock MP3 transportable speaker to fill any
occasion with music. The PlayDock MP3 docks all Creative
Zen MP3 players, as well as the Apple iPod, and plays uninterrupted,
crystal-clear digital music at home or for up to 10 hours
on the go with its built-in rechargeable battery. With a
built-in powered subwoofer, PlayDockMP3 offers sound so
rich and full-bodied it can fill a room or wide open space.
($249.99; us.creative.com, www.cambridgesoundworks.com).
- "For women who love radio. According to Arbitron Inc.,
over the course of a typical week, radio reaches 94 percent
of women over 18 years old. So, women are sure to love the
SoundWorks Radio CD, a sleek, stylish tabletop radio that
offers the benefits of a larger, full-featured home stereo
for enjoying great sound in the kitchen, the den or the
bedroom. But don't let its size fool you. The SoundWorks
Radio CD will fill an entire room with sound because of
its customized 3-speaker design, which includes a built-in
powered subwoofer. It plays standard CDs as well as MP3
files on CD-ROM, and has an AM/FM radio that shows station
and song information (RDS) where available. Front and rear
auxiliary inputs are available so additional audio sources
like an MP3 player can be connected. Two alarms and remote
control are also included ($349.99; www.cambridgesoundworks.com).
- "Make a fashion statement in your home theater. With
more people buying high definition flat panel TVs, home
theater systems are being purchased as much for fashion
as they are for function. As a result, new virtual surround
sound systems, like the SurroundWorks 200, that easily
blend into a room's décor are very popular with women. Simple
and stylish, SurroundWorks 200 uses a single multi-channel
center speaker which emulates the surround effect of five
or more individual speakers. The SurroundWorks speaker is
paired with a powerful subwoofer and a stylish DVD/AM/FM
control console. The entire system is wired using just two
foolproof connecting cables - so you won't see any wires
running across the family room ($999.99; www.cambridgesoundworks.com).
