SoundWorks Introduces SoundWorks Radio CD - Big Sound from a Small Radio
-
SoundWorks Radio CD Offers Unique Features Including Built-in Subwoofer,
MP3 Playback Capability, and Slot-Load CD
ANDOVER, MA, September
3, 2003 - With the introduction of its SoundWorks Radio™ CD, Cambridge
SoundWorks® has designed a high performance table radio unlike any other
on the market. The feature-packed SoundWorks Radio CD (U.S. $399.99) will
begin shipping in September. According to the company's design engineers,
the SoundWorks Radio CD is essentially a stereo system in the form of
a table radio. Like larger component stereo systems, the SoundWorks Radio
CD features a built-in powered subwoofer. The result is rich, deep bass
response from a small box. Cambridge SoundWorks, a manufacturer and retailer
of home-theater, home-audio and multimedia products, is a wholly owned
subsidiary of Creative Technology Ltd (Nasdaq: CREAF).
The SoundWorks Radio CD can decode and play MP3 files on CD-ROM. This
basically turns the Radio CD into the equivalent of an eight CD changer,
allowing users to enjoy hours of uninterrupted music from a single CD-ROM.
The radio's support of RDS™ (Radio Data Service) lets users see up-to-the-minute
text broadcasts from supporting FM stations, such as the title of the
song currently being played.
"There's simply no other table radio that offers the features and functionality
that we've packed into our new SoundWorks Radio CD," said Michael Sullivan,
president of Cambridge SoundWorks. "When we designed the SoundWorks Radio
CD, we were looking to raise the bar even higher for the category. What
we've introduced is a radio that pumps out a lot of power - not only terms
of sound, but also incredible features like MP3 playback - all from a
small box. And, staying true to Cambridge SoundWorks' heritage, we've
done this all at an affordable price."
A Stereo System in the Form of a Table Radio
The SoundWorks Radio CD uses high accuracy main speakers powered by a
specially contoured amplifier to produce rich, life-like sound. Unlike
other premium radios that provide only one speaker per channel, the SoundWorks
Radio CD uses an extra speaker (the powered subwoofer) to produce great
bass.
MP3 Functionality Turns Radio into 8-Disc CD-Changer
The SoundWorks Radio CD's ability to decode and playback MP3 audio files
on a CD-ROM will appeal to computer-savvy music lovers using a PC with
a sound card such as Creative's SoundBlaster® series. Users can rip seven
to eight audio CDs to separate folders on a CD-ROM. The SoundWorks Radio
CD's folder selection function treats each folder like an individual audio
CD. It also supports random play across folders on a CD-ROM.
Additional Features and Functionality
Designed to mirror the look of the company's high-end Newton Series™ loudspeakers,
the SoundWorks Radio CD is stylish and functional. One of its best features
is the motorized slot-load CD mechanism, which is based on the design
of high-end car CD players. Compared to tray-load or top-load mechanisms,
the slot-load feature is easier to use and requires no extra "dead" space
above or in front of the radio to insert a disc.
The SoundWorks Radio CD's credit-card sized remote control duplicates
all front-panel functions, including storing station presets and selecting
the functions of the two independent wakeup alarms.
The SoundWorks Radio CD's display panel consists of 32 large, backlit
text characters which shows the time, RDS station information, and CD
and MP3 title information (when available). The display makes it easy
for the user to walk through radio functions, such as setting the radio's
two wakeup settings. All of the SoundWorks Radio CD's secondary features
can also be adjusted through the JOG button's menu of adjustments: bass,
treble, stereo modes, loudness, dual alarms and text modes. JOG menu and
alarm feature adjustment is available in a choice of 5 languages (English,
French, German, Spanish or Italian).
A superb FM stereo tuner and clean AM reproduction are supported by twenty-four
radio station presets. The FM stereo tuner features sixteen FM station
presets, while the AM tuner offers eight direct access preset buttons,
which can also be programmed using the remote control. The SoundWorks
Radio CD offers a convenient front panel auxiliary input, along with a
headphone jack and rear panel auxiliary input.
The SoundWorks Radio CD features two independent alarms that play music
or a "tone" sound. Alarm activation, sleep delay and snooze options are
easily controlled from the palm-sized remote control. The clock features
a built-in backup battery, so a power outage will not affect timekeeping
accuracy. A "sleep" mode turns the radio sound off after a user-adjustable
15 to 120 minute interval. The display automatically adjusts its brightness
to suit the ambient lighting.

The SoundWorks Radio CD retails for $399.99. It is available in black
